How I Learned to Stop Working In the Business and Start Working On It

For years, I thought being busy meant being productive.

I worked 7 days a week. Took no holidays. Handled everything myself. I was proud of my hustle.

Until I realised I was building a prison, not a business.

The Shift: From Operator to Owner

The turning point came when I missed my son’s school performance. I was busy fixing an inventory issue. That night, I asked myself: Am I creating freedom — or just a job I can’t quit?

I had to learn to delegate, document, and detach.

Systems Over Sweat

I started hiring smart. I trained people properly. I built systems: for invoicing, for stock, for customer service.

That allowed me to step back — and think bigger. I went from being inside the machine to building the machine.

Final Thoughts

If you're always working in the business, you’re its employee.

Start working on it. Build processes. Empower others. Create time to think.

You’ll find that true growth begins when you stop being the bottleneck — and become the architect.
